The 40-82 Winchester was introduced as a block-powder cartridge in 1885. It gained enough popularity to make the transition into the smokeless powder era. It developed a higher muzzle velocity then many other blackpowder cartridges, which made it easier to hit with over unknown distance. The 40-82 gained a favorable reputation on elk and heavy game.
